I am a political researcher, currently working on EU migration policies, and an activist in movements and platforms related to municipalism and the right to the city. Over the last few years, I have been active in several city and municipalist networks, in Italy and abroad, but most of my political activity is still connected with the municipalist movement Cambiamo Messina dal Basso (CMdB). CMdB is the result of a long confluence process involving many political actors and realities of the city of Messina, Sicily and was part of the municipalist experience which administrated the city from 2013 to 2018. I myself took part in the last phase of our local government experience as Deputy-Mayor for Culture and Public education. Our commitment is devoted not only to the promotion of a more just and equal city, with cultural processes and the commons at its core, but also to a critical approach to institutions. We believe that bottom-up experiences can/should have a crucial role in contributing to a radical transformation of the very roots of our institutions and their way of meeting demands for rights, democracy and participation.
